Approved projects from the call "Civil Security - Critical Structures and Processes in Production and Logistics"

Production and logistics not only play a central role in supplying the population. They are also of elementary importance for Germany and Austria as business locations. Globalization and increasing digitization have already led to dynamic developments in recent years, which will accelerate even further in connection with the transformation to Economy 4.0. In this context, it is essential that existing solutions for ensuring the availability and integrity of goods and services are continuously developed further. This funding guideline supports innovative security solutions to increase the resilience of processes and structures in production and logistics, with a focus on areas that are particularly worthy of protection in terms of critical infrastructures. The funding guideline is open to bilateral projects with partners from Austria.

Ongoing joint projects:

FLUIT: Safety for networked air traffic management

Funding codes 13N15102 to 13N15105

Air traffic management systems regulate the safe operation of aircraft at all times, including on the ground, for example during loading. Until now, they have only been operated locally, separated from the Internet, to rule out hacker attacks. However, networking with the outside world offers great opportunities for more efficient processes between airports and other logistics providers. The goal of FLUIT is to enable the networked operation of air traffic management systems without creating new threats. Conventional security standards cannot be applied to such networks because airport systems are highly specialized for their tasks. To enable external connectivity, potential points of attack and risks must therefore be analyzed in detail and countermeasures devised.

safe-UR-chain: Security and traceability in civil production and value creation networks through blockchain

Funding codes 13N15150 to 13N15153

Companies worldwide are increasingly threatened by cybercrime, sabotage or industrial espionage. At the same time, the networking of production systems is steadily increasing. Data is now one of the most valuable resources, which must be comprehensively protected against theft and manipulation. In the safe-UR-chain project, all data streams are automatically recorded in a tamper-proof, redundant and traceable manner through the use of state-of-the-art solutions for monitoring communication between production systems in combination with blockchain-based security mechanisms. Mechanisms to increase fail-safety and to prevent and detect cybercrime are integrated into the system.

SILKE: Safe food chain through application of blockchain technology

Funding codes 13N15092 to 13N15098

Time and again, consumers receive reports of food contaminated with harmful substances or foreign bodies. Some of them pose a high risk when consumed. The search for the causes is often lengthy and costly. Recall actions to prevent damage are usually very extensive. In the SILKE project, the potential of the particularly forgery-proof blockchain technology is being researched in order to develop an IT solution for the seamless tracing of food from production to sale. Among other things, the project will investigate what data needs to be recorded in the system, how intelligent evaluation procedures can identify safety-critical events, and how the system can be designed economically in the interests of the companies. The IT solution will be tested by users on the basis of two specific use cases.

Completed joint projects:

NutriSafe: Safety in food production and logistics through distributed ledger technology

Funding codes 13N15070 to 13N15076

The EHEC and Fipronil scandals have shown that food safety and supply chain traceability are not only important in a crisis. Information systems play a key role in this, and new technologies can help make them as safe as possible. Therefore, Austria and Germany decided to join forces and conduct joint research on a bilateral level in order to provide the best possible protection for security-relevant trade chains. The goal of NutriSafe was to protect food production and trade against digital attacks such as the manipulation of data and systems. For this purpose, technologies, data models, business processes, service architectures as well as business models with blockchain technology were developed and provided as building blocks in a modular kit. Legal support, an evaluation of the results and the creation of recommendations for action ensured the system's practicality.

s4pt: Safety in pharmaceutical logistics

Funding codes 13N15089 and 13N15090

The supply of vital medicines poses a particular challenge in many respects. For this reason, Austria and Germany decided to join forces and conduct joint research on a bilateral level in order to provide the best possible protection for security-relevant supply chains. The aim of the s4pt project was to make the supply chains for pharmaceutical products that require special protection as secure as possible. Using the example of a cancer drug, software was developed that uses predictive algorithms to assess and avoid risks from the production of precursors through the entire manufacturing and logistics process to delivery.
