Approved projects from the call "Leading-edge research cluster for early detection, prevention and countering Islamist extremism"

Building on the German federal government's strategy for preventing extremism and promoting democracy and the National prevention program against Islamist extremism, a research cluster on the early detection, prevention and countering of Islamist extremism and terrorism was established within the framework of civil security research. The cluster is intended to bundle state-of-the-art findings and build upon them through its own research activities. In addition, application-oriented research projects driven primarily by the needs of security practitioners will be funded on an ongoing basis.

Ongoing joint projects:

ERAME: Detecting signs of radicalization in social media

Funding codes 13N15481 to 13N15483

Extremist actors use popular video platforms and channels to spread their worldview and reach a large number of people. Extremist content spreads rapidly both via video and the comments section on video platforms. The goal of the ERAME project is to provide support to security practitioners by developing an innovative tool for the verification and analysis of extremist content on video platforms such as YouTube. The development of the software demonstrator will significantly speed up the review of media channels such as YouTube, which has so far largely been done by hand.

MOTRA: Monitoring system and transfer platform on radicalization

Funding codes 13N15217 bis 13N15223

Radicalization and extremism pose major challenges for security authorities. Particular attention is paid to preventing and countering extremism and radicalization before they are expressed in violent acts. The MOTRA project will establish a central monitoring platform for the early detection, prevention and countering of extremism as a point of contact for scientists, authorities, civil society and political stakeholders. The resulting scientifically sound orientation basis can be used in particular by political decision-makers, investigative authorities and prevention institutions on the ground to develop further effective and targeted prevention and intervention measures.
